Bogorodica je rođena u Nazaretu, od ostarelih i pravednih roditelja Joakima i Ane. Po ocu, bila je od carskog roda Davidovog, po majci od roda prvosvešteničkog.
Ana je kao starica rodila kćer Mariju, po blagoslovu Božijem. Upravo je Bog i odredio Mariju da bude majka Isusa Hrista, i zato se slavi kao Presveta Bogorodica.
Doživeće najveće radosti i najveće boli, sve dok i sama, posle isteka zemaljskih dana, nije otišla u večnu svetlost i slavu. Ona je i danas zastupnica ljudi pred Tvorcem, kojoj se upućuju najtoplije molitve.
Pred njenim čudotvornim ikonama dešavaju se isceljenja, a ljudi u nevolji dobijaju pomoć.
Jesenje svadbe u Srbiji, od davnina, počinjale su od Male Gospojine.
Zemljoradnicima je današnji praznik označavao početak jesenjeg oranja i setvu ozimih useva. Priređivane su i razne stočarske svečanosti.
Veruje se da bilje ubrano između Velike i Male Gospojine ima posebna lekovita svojstva, kao i da jaja iz toga perioda mogu celu godinu da ostanu sveža pa se zato ostavljaju za nasad, a pilići izleženi u ove dane biće dobre nosilje.
Mnoge porodice slave Malu Gospojinu kao svoju krsnu slavu.
Ovaj dan dobar je za svadbe i veridbe. U mnogim naseljima održavaju se sabori, zavetine, preslave, molitve i litije, ove godine svedeno, zbog pandemije.
