Pravoslavna crkva i vernici slave Ivanjdan, rođenje svetog Jovana Krstitelja. Uz Hristovo i Bogorodičino, to je jedno od tri sveta rođenja koje praznuje crkva. Jovan se naziva Krstiteljem, jer je u reci Jordan krstio Gospoda Isusa Hrista, kao i Pretečom, jer je najavljivao dolazak Hristov i pozivao ljude na pokajanje. Na dan ovog velikog sveca praktikuju se i različiti običaji. Jedan od njih je i pletenje venčića od poljskog bilja i cveća, kojim se kite kapije. Venčići se čuvaju do narednog Ivanjdana, a bilje se koristi i u ishrani zbog blagotvornog uticaja. Vencima od ivanjskog cveća pokazuje se da je priroda u razvoju došla do svoje najviše tačke – sredine leta i da se time “ovenčala”.U predvečerje toga dana, u mnogim slovenskim krajevima palile su se po brdima ivanjske vatre oko kojih se igralo i pevalo. Jovan Krstitelj je svetitelj rođen je od starijih roditelja – oca, sveštenika Zaharija i majke Jelisavete, Bogorodičine rođake. Kada je Jelisaveta ostala trudna, Zaharije je zanemeo. Kada se rodio Preteča, od njegovog oca Zaharija je zatraženo da na pločici napiše ime deteta i kada je on napisao sinovljevo ime, istog časa je progovorio. Kao mlad Jovan je otišao u pustinju gde se hranio korenjem i divljim medom. U propovedima je kritikovao moralno posrnuće svojih savremenika, pozivajući ih da se pokaju i vrate životu po Božijim zakonima. On je krštavao ljude u reci Jordan, govoreći im da ih on krsti vodom, a da za njim “ide onaj koji će ih krstiti Duhom Svetim i ognjem”. Jovana Preteču je pogubio judejski kralj Irod. Koliko je Jovan Krstitelj veliki svetac potvrđuje i to što su u kalendaru SPC njemu se posvećena tri praznika – osim današnjeg Ivanjdana, tu je još i 20. januar – Sabor Svetog Jovana Krstitelja – Jovanjdan, te 11. septembar – Usekovanje glave Svetog Jovana Krstitelja.
