Srpska pravoslavna crkva i njeni vernici danas slave Petrovdan, crkveni i narodni praznik posvećen svetim apostolima Petru i Pavlu, koji se slavi 29. juna po julijanskom kalendaru (12. jul po gregorijanskom). Jedan od ključnih datuma letnjeg ciklusa praznika, koji ima mnogo zajedničkog s Ivanjdanom, glavnim letnjim praznikom. Petrovdan je smatran za kalendarsku granicu u godini: posle njega u prirodi nastupaju promene, koje ukazuju na približavanje jeseni (narodni kalendar). Kod Srba postoji običaj da se uoči ovog velikog praznika pale lile, koje se prave od mlade kore divlje trešnje ili breze. Obično se to radi na mestima gde se narod okuplja, na trgovima, raskršćima i u tome učestvuju deca i omladina. Paljenje vatre i lila simboliše na ona vremena kada su hristoborni carevi progonili i mučili hrišćane, vezujući ih za drvene stubove, natapajući ih smolom i paleći ih. Njihova tela su tada gorela kao buktinje, osvetljavajući trgove kao danas simbolične vatre i lile.
